X-Rite ColorChecker Passport
What is the X-Rite ColorChecker Passport ?
Colour passport is a colour profiling system that reduces the amount of time that is spent in post-production, Adobe Lightroom or Photoshop, to achieve the correct colour balance across all of your digital images.

The handy sized colorchecker, 3.5 inches x 5 inches when folded, is a tough plastic case (shown above) that encloses
- The first panel is a white balance target that is essentially a grey card that can be used if you wish to custom white balance in-camera.
- The second panel with two rows of grey squares that are used for creative enhancements in post production. The top row for creating a warmer portrait photo, left hand square is neutral. The lower row will either warm or cool on landscape photos, centre square is neutral. Both of these neutral squares are marked with a small black notch, see photo below.
3. The third panel has 18 coloured squares and 6 six squares that range from white to black. The coloured squares are used by the software that comes with the xrite passport. The second or third grey square on the bottom row can be used to set white balance using the eye-dropper tool in Lightroom or Photoshop, see photo below.
How to use the X-Rite ColorChecker Passport
The X Rite Passport is very simple to use follow these steps.
In camera (Jpeg file capture)
This is for white balance only. No colour correction.
- Take a correctly exposed photo of the colour checker passport filling the frame by about 50% to 90% . See below.
- Set in camera the white balance to “CUSTOM WHITE BALANCE” using the image taken in step 1. as the target. (Check your camera’s user manual for this step, as the menu in your camera will be model specific)
- Take all of the photos at that location/lighting condition.
- Repeat 1. to 3. when lighting condition changes.
RAW file capture
- Set the colour balance on your camera, i.e. sun, shade etc. As an alternative you can set a “CUSTOM WHITE BALANCE” see In camera (Jpeg file capture) either of these methods in this step will work. Then proceed to step 2 below.
- Take a correctly exposed photo of the colour checker passport filling the frame by about 50% to 90% . See image below.
- Do not change the colour balance on your camera.
- Take all of the photos at that location/lighting condition.
- Repeat 1. to 4. when lighting condition changes.
Creating DNG Profiles in Lightroom
If this is your first time of using the colour checker passport you will need to load the software that came with the passport onto your computer.
If you are using Lightroom, the ColorChecker Passport Desktop Application makes building a DNG profile a very simple and automated process.
- Open the Raw image of the ColorChecker target that you shot earlier. You do not need to perform a white balance; the ColorChecker Passport application will analyse the image and make adjustments automatically.
- Do not edit the image. In fact, any edits will be ignored when you begin building the profile. Make sure to verify that it was exposed properly.
- Under the File menu, select Export
- From the Export To window, click the drop down arrow. When the menu appears, select X-Rite Presets from the list.
- Enter a name for the profile that describes the lighting conditions of the shot and click the Export button.
- You can continue to work while Lightroom finishes the profile. Watch the progress bar in the upper left corner.
The new profile will be created automatically and placed in the location where Adobe stores DNG profiles for Camera Raw and Lightroom.
- PC: You must set up your folder options to View Hidden Folders to be able to navigate to these paths. •
- Vista – [root drive, typically C:]\Users\[username]\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\CameraRaw\CameraProfiles
- XP – [root drive, typically C:]\Documents and Settings\[username]\Application Data\Roaming\Adobe\CameraRaw\CameraProfiles
- Mac: /Users//Library/Application Support/Adobe/Camera Raw/Camera Profiles/ C:]\Users\[username]\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\CameraRaw\CameraProfiles
- You will be asked to re-launch Lightroom before you can select the new DNG profile.
- With an image selected, go to the Develop module.
- In the righthand panel, scroll down to Camera Calibration and select the Profile pull-down. Choose the new DNG profile from this list.
