Kitzbuhel Stories Schwarzsee

Of greed, gold and lake water.

Centuries ago, a beautiful, majestic farmhouse stood on the spot where the Schwarzsee is now located. The house was inhabited by a mysterious woman whose identity nobody knew.

Buy this Print

One stormy night, a heavily laden wagon drove up to the house. Six strong men dragged a heavy chest, filled with silver and gold, into the woman's house. Shortly afterwards, the farmhouse vanished - submerged beneath the waters of the Schwarzsee.

Nobody knew why it happened, except a young servant who had been peering through the window of the so-called "Schwarzer Hof" When he saw the woman with all her gold, he was overcome by a powerful greed and smashed open the window - at which point, the house was consumed by a vast deluge.

The servant survived. He only told his story on his deathbed - including the tale of the treasure that had sunk to the bottom of the Schwarzsee, where to this day, it has still never been discovered. - from Kitzbühel Tourismus

Schwarzsee is of a moor lake situated 2 km west of Kitzbuhel Austria, along the Brixental Road in the the Kitzbuhel Alps. The lake is considered to be one of the most beautiful and warmest lakes for bathing in the Austrian Alps. It is really perfect to enjoy a swim as well as the fantastic view of the Wilder Kaiser mountains with peaks higher than 2,000 metres.

Safari Njema - Crinan Canal

Heading south east from Crinan through the canal towards Ardrishaig. The canal was constructed between 1794 and 1801, providing an alternative and shorter sea route for the fishing and commercial ships. This was popular with the Clyde puffers that carried their cargo between the villages of the West Highlands and the larger town of Glasgow on the Clyde, without the need to travel around the Kintyre peninsula.

St Peters Square Vatican City Rome Italy designed principally by Donato Bramante, Michelangelo, Carlo Maderno and Gian Lorenzo Bernini, St. Peter’s is the most renowned work of Renaissance architecture and remains one of the largest churches in the world. While it is neither the mother church of the Roman Catholic Church nor the cathedral of the Bishop of Rome, St. Peter’s is regarded as one of the holiest Catholic sites. It has been described as “holding a unique position in the Christian world” and as “the greatest of all churches of Christendom”.

By Roman Catholic tradition, the basilica is the burial site of its namesake Saint Peter, one of the twelve apostles of Jesus and, also according to tradition, the first Bishop of Rome and therefore first in the line of the papal succession. Tradition and strong historical evidence hold that Saint Peter’s tomb is directly below the altar of the basilica. For this reason, many Popes have been interred at St. Peter’s since the Early Christian period. There has been a church on this site since the time of Constantine the Great. Construction of the present basilica, replacing the Old St. Peter’s Basilica of the 4th century, began on 18 April 1506 and was completed on 18 November 1626.

The lighthouse was built in 1873 to warn vessels of the offshore Bristo Rock, that had been the site of many wrecks off this area of the Ayrshire coast. The lighthouse was located where Turnberry Castle once stood at Turnberry Point, on the advise of the engineers David and Thomas Stevenson.

Crocodile Rock on the Isle of Millport, located in the Clyde estuary, Scotland

Crocodile Rock Millport

Crocodile Rock Millport - It’s possibly been around for a million years, but just over century ago Mr Brown a local to Millport was passing by after a partaking of lunchtime refreshment or two and saw the bare rock as a crocodile and decided to set to work with a brush and paint (or so the story goes). This well-known landmark has become a famous attraction with generations of children being photographed on the Millport Crocodile.

Millport, the island's only town, is located in a bay on the south coast.  Looking south beyond the neighbouring island of Little Cumbrae, lies Ailsa Craig about 40 miles away. Ailsa Craig which marks the midway point to Northern Ireland, which in clear conditions is just visible. To the north beyond the upper Clyde estuary, can be seen Ben Lomond and the Arrochar Alps. To the west of Cumbrae lies the islands of Bute and Arran, while on the other side of Knapdale the Paps of Jura are visible. A few miles to the east are the Renfrewshire hills, with the town of Largs and village of Fairlie and the deep water coal terminal and power station at Hunterston on the shoreline.
