Seascape Photography Shipwreck - I venture out on to one of the largest tidal beaches in the world at low tide to explore and photograph some of the most fascinating coastal features in the south west of England.

I decided to visit Berrow and Burnham on Sea after asking my followers on Instagram where I should go next, and I'm glad that the coast got the vote. Even though the day was dull and grey, I tried to use this to my advantage in telling the story about the stricken SS Nornen.

The coast is far from my comfort zone when it comes to photography, and I haven't worked out how to avoid getting covered in sand for a start! But I enjoy it because it is something new and gives me an opportunity learn new things, and that is something I thrive on.

Photographing Landscapes Different Approach

Photographing Landscapes Different Approach - Trying to recreate images we have seen online or in print is a great way to pick up the skills and "tool box" necessary to then go on to develop your own style and your own approach. In this video, I explore a new approach I am getting to grips with that allows me to create an image of what I see and what I feel when out in nature, so that I can capture my image rather than someone else's. In essence it is about slowing down and working out what it is that you feel when you come across a scene that you want to photograph...

Finding Order Amongst Chaos

Finding Order Amongst Chaos - It is no secret that woodland photography is challenging, I fail more often than not. But over the course of the last few months I have been working on improving my woodland composition and in this video I share the things I have picked up and learned that have helped me improve.

Woodlands are chaotic and jumbled and it is difficult to capture an image that doesn't come across that way, but our eyes have a way of singling out points of interest, and by examining those in more detail it is possible to limit the clutter and come away with cleaner compositions that are closer to what you first saw and wanted to capture.

There are expert woodland photographers out there, and I'm not one of them, so if you want to explore this subject in more detail take a look at these videos below, and feel free to recommend any others in the comments 🙂

Shooting in Mist

Shooting in Mist - In this video I capture what has to be one of my most favourite images yet! A tree really stood out in the mist and the diffused sun above it completed the image so perfectly. I could have easily stayed home and missed it as I was in the throes of a cold, but as I usually miss foggy conditions I was determined to get out and see what I could capture.

The conditions and timing worked out perfectly, and no sooner had I arrived did the opportunity present itself!

I urge anyone who is a coin toss away from staying home to always go out because you never know if you are going to get one of your favourite images like I did.

Enjoy!

Woodland Photography Seeking Autumn Colour

Woodland Photography Seeking Autumn Colour

Woodland Photography Seeking Autumn Colour - Autumn is well and truly here! In this video I go exploring a local woodland focussing on picking out the details and autumn colours.

I've been sitting at home and fretting over the fact that it seems like a lot of photographers have already scouted out and picked their locations for bagging some great autumn images. I'm fretting because I haven't...

Instead of sitting at home dwelling on this I decided to go out to a local woodland for a walk with the idea that I would stick to the brief of capturing autumn colour rather than a grand autumn vista.

On the walk I really started to notice the oranges, yellows, and reds that stood out from the almost monochrome greens and greys that are still dominating under the canopy of the trees. This was eye opening, and meant that I had a main focal point, or feature if you like, in those colours, and that is what of my influenced my images.

I enjoy shooting local woods, but still find it challenging, but that is what prompted me to return. My second video where I go and practice photography in the woods closest to my house remains my most popular video, and most viewed video so far... I'm not sure why, as I feel that my videos, and my photography to some extent, have come a long way since then, but I would be interested to hear your thoughts about my content and if you like the way things are going.

Peak District Sunrise

Peak District Sunrise

Peak District Sunrise - I visit Mam Tor before the sun rise and capture three variations of a classic view on one of the best mornings I have ever experienced!

There are of course many elements of photography, composition, depth of field, focal point, to name but a few... all of which would be inconsequential if it was not for light.

I wanted to see what effect the changing light of the morning would have when I capture a shot of “that gate” on the great ridge a short walk down from the summit of Mam Tor in the Peak District.
The images I capture in this video range from blue hour to golden hour, with the moment the sun rises, casting the first light of the day over the hills of Derbyshire, in between. Each image is different, and has it’s own qualities, and I like them all.

However, on the morning itself, there was such an incredible temperature inversion which was pushing cloud up and over the hills in such a spectacular way, I also had to capture a few other opportunistic shots! I include these towards the end of the video if you want to see them, stay tuned.

Autumn is the perfect time to visit Mam Tor for a sunrise, as the cooler nights mea temperature inversions occur more often and you will see the spectacular display that I got. It really was incredible, and I had to remind myself to take photographs and record the video instead of just standing there and admiring it as I sipped my coffee.

Reshooting Scene From Past

Reshooting Scene From Past - I've been lacking a bit of motivation of late, so to give myself a reason to get back out there shooting, I decided to go and retake an image I shot 10 years ago. The idea was to compare the two photos and demonstrate to myself that I have made improvements!

Because it is so hard to see improvement day by day I thought I would try and better the shot I took 10 years ago.

What I saw in my opinion was several improvements - my image was sharper overall, slightly better composed, and a lot more natural looking. Whether it is really better or not is still difficult for me to say, because a lot will come down to personal tastes, but I prefer the image from today, and the more natural lighting, compared to the very over-processed look I had achieved with a shoddy HDR job on a knocked off version of photoshop that I was using 10 years ago.

Gear and software has come a long way since then, but really what I noticed about myself is that my approach was a lot more considered. in terms of exposure I bracketed, and ensured my panoramic set up worked out well by levelling my tripod properly. I gave more concern to how the light would be and how it would affect the overall feeling of the image... 10 years ago I think I was mainly concerned with making it look dramatic and impactful without really having any reason why.

After I had finished shooting, I sat and watched the sun rise over the village where I spent my formative years, and again my thoughts returned to that of my mum. A year ago we were just 4 weeks away from her passing, and I still can't but help dwell on how badly her illness had affected me.
