Canon EF Extender

Canon EF Extender

Canon EF Extender

Canon EF Extender is available in two strengths 2X and 1.4X, that increase the focal length of your lens by a multiple of 2 or 1.4, i.e. 200mm with a 2x will become the equivalent of a 400mm lens.

So for a fraction of the cost of a new lens of say 400mm you can use your 70-200 lens, that everyone has, add an extender and you have a 140-400mm.

Buy your Canon Extender EF 2x III  from Amazon.

This is very true but there is a downside, with a 2X extender you will loose 2 f-stops i.e. your Canon EF 70-200mm f/4L IS Lens is now an f8 lens, this is the additional cost every time you add an extender, the 1.4X extender will cost you 1 f-stop, i.e. f5.6 There is also a loss in sharpness with both extenders. Some cameras won't auto focus at f8.

Extenders some photographers love them some hate them.

Personally I have a Canon EF Extender 2X

Why

  1. I don't own a 400mm lens. (I do have a 70-200mm)
  2. The number of times I would use a 400mm lens does not justify the cost.
  3. If I had a 400mm lens something would have to be left out of my Lowepro Flipside 300 backpack
  4. I wouldn't be prepared to carry the additional weight and possibly not use the lens.

The 2X Extender is 72mm diameter x 53 mm long and weighs a mere 325 grams.

It is my opinion that this more than offsets the loss of 2 f-stops and reduction in sharpness.

For my workflow as a landscape photographer the camera will on most occasions be on a tripod and the f-stop would have been possibly f11.

As for the loss in sharpness, if it is a problem then I would recover as much as possible in post.

I don't use auto focus very often when capturing landscapes.

I don't claim that this workflow negates the problems that occur when using an extender, to me it makes it a workable solution when there is the need for the extra focal length.

Leave a comment below, I am interested to know what you think.

Canon EF 70-200mm f/4L IS Lens

Canon EF 70-200mm f/4L IS Lens

Canon EF 70-200mm f/4L IS Lens

The Canon EF 70-200mm f/4L IS Lens, with four-stop Image Stabilizer (IS), ideal lens for handheld work. The IS can allow you to use shutter speeds up to four stops slower than would otherwise be possible with a similar non-stabilised lens, with no increase in image blur. When panning horizontally, the IS system can be set, using a switch on the barrel, to correct only for unwanted vertical shake.

Buy your Canon EF 70-200mm F/4.0 L IS USM Lens  from Amazon.

The build quality of this lens is nothing short of what you would expect from a Canon L lens – smooth controls and feels like a quality product.

All moving parts for focus and zoom are contained inside of the lens barrel, hence it does not change size or shape when zooming and focusing. This type of design, weather sealing and care from you, keep the internal workings of lens dry and dust free, (DO NOT TEST TO EXTREEMES).

The wide zoom ring is situated towards the rear of the lens. The zoom ring moves with little effort, though it is well damped and does not creep when pointed towards the ground.

The focus ring is also made of rubber, with a finer texture to its ribbing than the zoom ring, which helps to differentiate the two controls by feel.

The side of the lens barrel has the switches for A/F Range, AF/MF, stabiliser On/Off and Stabiliser Mode.

The USM auto focus is quick, and very quiet. An option of full-time manual override is always available, making it possible to adjust focus without switching from auto to manual. The barrel of the lens also has focus distance scale at the top.

A constant f4 maximum aperture across the full focal range, meaning exposure settings will not change as the lens is zoomed from 70mm through to 200mm.

A circular aperture diaphragm gives the out of focus areas a smoother look. While the sharp objects stand out against a smooth blurred background.

The 67mm filter thread size at the front element of the lens does not rotate during focusing, very important if you use a polarising filter when shooting.

A black plastic lens hood, ET 74 is supplied with the lens.  It is of the type that turns on and clicks lightly into place. The inside of  the lens hood is covered in non-reflective felt, which helps prevent any light from being reflected onto the front lens element.

The lens is supplied with two lens caps one for the front of the lens that clips into the filter thread and the other that fits onto the EF mount.

At a length of just 172mm, and weight of only 760g, the EF 70-200mm f/4L IS USM is an ideal lens for many genres of photography when you need to travel light and maintaining image quality.

As standard this lens is not supplied with a tripod collar, as is the 70-200mm f2.8 lens. My preference is to have the tripod collar as I shoot using my Manfrotto 055XPROB tripod for landscape photos. though the tripod collar can be purchased separately

The 70-200mm f4 IS lens is a very popular focal length range for many types of photography.

Here are a few that spring to mind

  • Landscape photos
  • Portraits (with flash)
  • Outside family shoots i.e. at the park or beach.
  • Non-professional sports (outside)
  • Wedding (inside with high ISO)
  • Some wildlife

As a landscape photographer this lens is always attached to the camera body when in my Lowepro Flipside 300, and is usually my first choice.

Maybe you would have thought it would have been a wide angle lens. Let me explain why the 70-200 is my favourite. Have you ever taken a landscape photo that you thought was the best photo that you had ever taken, only to find that when you got back to the computer it did not look just as you remembered it? Then when you crop the image in Lightroom you reveal what it was that caught your eye when you were out shooting. Yes.

Unfortunately our brain does not always understand what our eyes see. My workflow in camera is to start in tight and zoom out until I see what I seen with the naked eye.

When selling prints I want all the pixels the sensor captured to be in the image, allowing it to be printed as large as possible.

The Canon EF 70-200mm f4 L IS lens is 55g heavier than the non-stabilised canon 70-200mm lens it is still a light lens that is always packed in my camera bag when travelling.

Canon EF 1.4x and EF 2x Extenders

Using an extender will –

  1. Reduce the effective aperture of the lens by 1 stop (f5.6) for the 1.4x and 2 stops (f8) for the 2x converter.
  2. On consumer grade Canon DSLRs will disable auto focus at f8. The A/F on the Canon 1series bodies should continue to operate as normal.
  3. Not have the same quality/sharpness as the equivalent  focal length lens.

Extenders some photographers love them some hate them. See the post on extenders that will follow later. (The link will be active when extender post has been published)

To sum up

The Canon EF 70-200mm f4 L IS lens, has great image quality, great auto focus, light weight, weather sealing, 4 stop image stabilisation.

  1. If I had to replace my current Canon 70-200mm f4 L IS lens would I buy the same again?
  2. YES. This lens has paid for its self over the years.

Velbon super mag slider

The Velbon super mag slider

Velbon super mag slider

The Velbon super mag slider is a solid, reliable, not too expensive set of focusing rails for macro photography, definitely a nice piece of macro photography equipment to have both in the field and in the studio.

Buy your Velbon Super Mag Slider from Amazon.

The camera slider has two macro rails, the first that slides towards the subject, and the second that slides across the subject. The unit is supplied fully assembled and ready to be attached to your tripod. A steady tripod that is suitable for the combined weight of your camera, lens and slider is essential. I use a Manfrotto 055XPROB Pro Tripod and a Manfrotto Basic Pan Tilt Head with Quick Lock, with a Canon body and lens combined weight of 2 kg. The results that I got with this set-up was sharp across the full length of the slide.

The Velbon slider can easily be split into two slides, with an allen key provided. allowing the use of the first slide, the longer one, thereby reducing the possibility of vibration.

My preference when re-assembling both the slides is to reversed the second slide, the smaller slide, this positions the adjusting thumb wheels to be at opposite sides of the camera slider.

An additional feature is that the camera sliders can be used as a panoramic head, nodal point slider. With the macro rail on a tripod attach the camera and lens. Align two objects at the left side of the viewfinder one close to the camera, one far away, then rotate the camera on the tripod until the two objects are at the right side of the viewfinder. If they align then the nodal point is set correct, if not then adjust the slider away from or closer to the subject.

Walking Austrian Alps

Austrian Alps

 Walking Austrian Alps

Walking Austrian Alps a favourite destination for ramblers holidays. Walking holidays in The Tyrol region of Austria range from easy low-level, along the valley to the strenuous walks to the high peaks of the surrounding Alps. The walking distance and the path numbers are well-marked and maintained in each of the local areas. Summer weather in Austria can be mixed between cold damp days to warm sunny days where you can enjoy a rest and refreshment at the mountain top restaurants. During the Summer local farmers use the high pastures of the mountains to feed their cattle, which roam freely.

Walking Austrian Alps, is typical of a scene that you would find while trekking in Austria.

Ring Light Macro Ring Flash

Ring Light

Ring Light Macro Ring Flash

Macro ring light led flash made by Neewer® FC100 LED Macro Ring Flash With 7 Adapter Rings for Canon EOS 1D/ 1Ds Series 7D/5D MarkII 60D 50D 40D 30D 20D 10D 550D 500D 450D 400D 350D 300D, Nikon D7000 D3100 D3200 D5100 D5000 ,Sony and Other Digital SLR Cameras and sold through Amazon

This ring contains 32 LEDs that can be on as a constant light, of used as a ring flash (all 32 LEDs) or used as a flash (16 LEDs left or 16 LEDs right).

The colour temperature is 5500k approximately. The ring light fits to the filter thread at the front of the lens using one of the seven adaptor rings that are supplied. The thread size of the seven adaptor rings are as follows: 52mm, 55mm, 62mm, 67mm, 72mm and 77mm, this range I find covers all the lenses that I would use. The ring light can also be used off-camera, which allows for side lighting to fill shadows. The range of the ring light is between 5 and   150 cm with a guide number of 15(GN). The led ring light flash exposure is adjustable by +3EV to -3EV, this is useful when using the macro ring flash attached to the camera and working close to the subject.

With a price of only £18.94 at the time of this post why would you not buy the Neewer® FC100 LED Macro Ring Flash With 7 Adapter Rings for Canon EOS 1D/ 1Ds Series 7D/5D MarkII 60D 50D 40D 30D 20D 10D 550D 500D 450D 400D 350D 300D, Nikon D7000 D3100 D3200 D5100 D5000 ,Sony and Other Digital SLR Cameras sold through Amazon.

When the control unit is in the hot shoe of the camera, if the led ring is not used for 30 seconds the unit will revert into sleep mode. Pressing any button or the shutter release will wake up the light ring, thus extending the battery life of the 4 AA batteries.

The sync speed for use as a flash is 1/100 second. The construction of both the control unit and the ring led light are of plastic, though they have both been well assembled and operated just as described. The approximate weight of the kit is 230 grams.
