Velbon super mag slider

The Velbon super mag slider is a solid, reliable, not too expensive set of focusing rails for macro photography, definitely a nice piece of macro photography equipment to have both in the field and in the studio.

The camera slider has two macro rails, the first that slides towards the subject, and the second that slides across the subject. The unit is supplied fully assembled and ready to be attached to your tripod. A steady tripod that is suitable for the combined weight of your camera, lens and slider is essential. I use a Manfrotto 055XPROB Pro Tripod and a Manfrotto Basic Pan Tilt Head with Quick Lock, with a Canon body and lens combined weight of 2 kg. The results that I got with this set-up was sharp across the full length of the slide.

The Velbon slider can easily be split into two slides, with an allen key provided. allowing the use of the first slide, the longer one, thereby reducing the possibility of vibration.

My preference when re-assembling both the slides is to reversed the second slide, the smaller slide, this positions the adjusting thumb wheels to be at opposite sides of the camera slider.

An additional feature is that the camera sliders can be used as a panoramic head, nodal point slider. With the macro rail on a tripod attach the camera and lens. Align two objects at the left side of the viewfinder one close to the camera, one far away, then rotate the camera on the tripod until the two objects are at the right side of the viewfinder. If they align then the nodal point is set correct, if not then adjust the slider away from or closer to the subject.

I am not subsidised in any way or form by Velbon.
