The Lowepro Flipside 300 Photo Black Backpacks suitable for DSLR gear up to a pro camera body(Canon 1Ds iii) with Canon lenses 70 – 200 mm lens attached with tripod mount (lens hood reversed), spare camera battery, 24 – 105 mm lens (lens hood stored separate), 100 mm macro (with lens hood detached) 50 mm lens and a Tamron 28 mm lens (rubber lens hood). Additional items inside main compartment Hoodman Loop, ColorChecker Passport, ExpoDisc and a Calumet DFM3/Gossen flash/light meter. The zipped side pocket is suitable for small items only i.e. pens, business cards, memory cards, backup batteries. The mesh pocket on the other side of the backpack is suitable for a small water bottle.
On the back there is a strap to hold the top of a tripod similar to a Manfrotto 055XPROB Pro Tripod (closed length 65.5 cm) using a hideaway tripod holder at the bottom of the camera backpack. When the tripod is attached the backpack will not sit upright as the tripod holder is about 6 cm lower than the base of the bag. See photo below.
Access to the Lowepro is possible without having to remove the backpack completely. This is achieved by slipping both of your arms through the shoulder straps and spinning the backpack around your body. With the Lowe pro now in front of you lower the top to point away from you, the hip strap will support the weight allowing both of your hands to be used to access the back of the backpack. The Lowepro Backpack is comfortable to wear over a day’s photo shoot, due to the padded shoulder straps and in the area next to your back.
The external dimensions are 25.8 x 17.4 x 44.5 cm which is within the carry-on dimensions on UK airlines.
The product weight is 1.2 kg, which takes up quite a bit of the standard carry-on weight allowance 5 kg (varies depending on the carrier). Though having said that the compact design of the Lowepro Flipside 300 is deceiving, and I have never been asked to have the weight checked.
The quality of both the materials used, and the manufacturing of the backpack are up to the usual high standard that I have experienced with previous Lowepro backpacks that I have purchased.
Something I would have liked to see included would have been the all-weather cover that weatherproof camera back pack. This cover is included in the Lowepro Flipside 400 AW Backpack for DSLR – Black
and the Lowepro Flipside 500 AW Backpack for DSLR – Black
backpacks at about an incremental increase of £20 each.
