Canon Lenses EF 50mm f/1.8 Value Review

Canon Lenses

Canon lenses , EF 50mm f/1.8 is the lightest EF lens in the Canon range, weighing a mere 130g. It may the lens that is in the camera bags of many professional and amateur photographers.
The Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II lens for dslr Canon cameras, are so popular and such an important lens but it costs well under £100 when bought at Amazon Canon EF 50 mm f/1.8 II Lens and it returns sharp images even when the aperture is wide open. Stop it down just a little more to f/2.8 and f/3.2 and the lens gets even sharper.

The Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II on a full frame body is the ideal standard focal length. Connect it to a cropped sensor body (x1.6 crop factor) and you have an equivalent focal length of 80mm, making it a good length for full-body portraits, or closer head and shoulders. If you are a video shooter then, the 50 1.8 is also a great lens for video with your DSLR.
If you are looking for an inexpensive and very sharp lens from Canon then I don’t believe that you can get a better lens than the 50mm f1.8 from Canon, did I mention that is way less than £100.

Canon Lenses – Frequently Bought Together

At the time of writing this post Amazon are selling the 50mm f1.8 plus a lens hood plus a Hoya UV (C) filter for less than £92. Click on this link   Canon EF 50 mm f/1.8 II Lens then scroll down to Frequently Bought Together

The images below were taken to give an example of the sharpness of the f1.8 lens. The first image is for edge sharpness, the second is for center sharpness.

This was not done under controlled conditions, just for your information

Unlike other Canon lenses this lens is a plastic construction including the lens mount (the lenses are glass of course). With the weight of the lens being just 130g (4.6 oz) there is little chance of excessive strain on the plastic lens mount, frequent changing of the lens possibly could be a problem.

With only five aperture blades it doesn’t have the bokeh of the 8-blade Canon EF 50mm f/1.2L USM lens, nor does it have the £1300 price tag.
The 50mm f/1.8 lens is so small and light that I always leave it in my backpack camera bag, not sure I would do the same with the 50mm f/1.2L when travelling.
If you are looking for a cheaper way to create sharp pictures, the Canon 50mm f/1.8 will give you much better results than any standard kit lens for less money. And it will out-perform kit lenses in low light situations. For macro photos add a Canon Extension Tubes and you’ve got a good combo for macro photography.

Since this is a prime lens you lose the ability to zoom. But then again, your pictures will look so much better compared to your zooming kit lens!

This lens might not be the first choice when replacing your kit lens, but I don’t know of a better second lens available for twice this price.

I am not subsidised in any way or form by Canon.

Buy the Canon EF 50 mm f/1.8 II Lens from Amazon.

It won’t cost you any extra, but it will contribute towards the running costs of this site.

Thanks Alex
